I’ve always been fascinated by outsiders, people who don’t quite fit into societal expectations and exist on the fringes, just trying to get by or be left alone. I relate deeply to characters who are trapped between their own inner turmoil and the need to navigate a world full of contradictions and absurdities. I suppose one could argue that I’m comparing notes. Despite these books being dark and unsettling, they are also comforting. As a writer of psychological literary fiction, I can say it’s clear that these novels inspire me creatively and resonate deeply with me; they offer a window into the quiet chaos that resides in many of us.
I first read Josef K.'s haunting tale when I was a teenager. I hadn’t read anything by Kafka before and was initially quite frustrated because it wasn’t clear what the hell was going on, which, in retrospect, is rather the point.
I read this book again about five years ago and still found it a disturbing reflection on how society dehumanises the individual, often with no rhyme or reason, one might say Kafkaesque. Interestingly, I found it even more relatable as an adult.

This was a great book, probably my favorite by Chuck Palahniuk. I love how all the characters are oddball outsiders, mostly just trying to get by in life by any means necessary. They are obsessive, misguided, and all drowning in their own flawed existence to some degree.
It’s also laugh-out-loud funny in some parts and disturbingly grotesque in others. I especially enjoyed the portrait of Victor’s inner emptiness, as he essentially feeds off his own issues as a form of survival.

I read this probably when I was in my early twenties. Randle McMurphy was, and still is, to some degree, an inspiring character: a rebellious soul, a flawed genius, a bit of a wrong’un at times, but also a hilariously cocky piss-taker.
There’s something deeply human in the portrayal of this character and his conflict with institutionalised authority, as represented by the frankly terrifying Nurse Ratched. It may be set in a psychiatric hospital, but I find the themes relatable to the wider world, the constant pressure to conform or be crushed. I still feel incensed by it.

I was late discovering this book; I’ve read it twice now, but the first time was only about five years ago. I was shocked when I first read it; it feels as if PTSD has been distilled into book form.
The way the narrative bounces around, like an alarming reflection of a shattered mind, was quite an inspiring concept. I’m glad not to be Billy Pilgrim, who is brutalised and traumatised by unfathomable absurdities. Knowing that Vonnegut was a POW in Dresden, an event that kicks off the book, gives it an even darker edge for me.

It took me over twenty years to finish this book; I hated the first chapter that much. Every time I tried to read it, I gave up before even reaching the second chapter. When I finally pushed through, it was well worth it. Ironically, within that time frame, many of the darker dystopian narratives about pleasure and the illusion of freedom seem to have come true.
I was especially fascinated by the second protagonist, John the Savage. His alienation from the world into which he is suddenly submerged is deeply relatable. The struggle between the self and a society one views with disgust feels all too true, and far too relevant.
